Catalans stand up for minorities: Sign it Europe!

It is undoubtable that us, Catalans, have come a long way in the fight for our rights, even if we have not reached the end. Every Catalan is proud of their identity, and of the fact that they do not tolerate repression, deprivation of rights, and the systematic robbery of the minorities by the leading power. Nevertheless, these values can only become complete if we do not keep them to ourselves but help every small people if they ask for it in the legal battle against their oppressors. And now these small peoples of Europe are counting on us in connection with a petition about a new European Union initiative.

Until now EU laws have only considered those groups minorities that are represented in lower numbers than the rest of the inhabitants, those who consist a nation. Nevertheless, EU laws have not been able to resolve a certain issue which caused minorities problems that slow them down and stop them from developing and thriving. Namely, in those areas where minorities are represented in large numbers, furthermore, they might consist the majority, why are they not entitled similar rights to the majority of the entire nation?

What do those say who launched this EU Initiative?

According to the minority of Székelys, who are a majority themselves within their territory of Székelyland in Romania, the European Union should create the institution of „National Regions”.  This would mean that those territories that can be circumscribed geographically and a certain minority is represented as majority or has a large number of inhabitants should be recognised by the European Union. Those who live there should have autonomy from state institutions when it comes to using EU resources, developmental directives and so on.

At the moment, Székelyland is one of the poorest regions in Romania, where there are problems with the use of their mother tongue as well. Poverty leads to migration. The capitalist state exploits their forests, often killing off wildlife, leaving ecological disasters behind. All this should remind us of our national symbol, the donkey, and its sad vision. There is the eternal memento of a small village in the middle of Székelyland which was sunk during to the construction of a reservoir.

Székelyland’s state and majority nation, Romania should receive this initiative enthusiastically as economic development, preservation of the nature and the sharing of cultural treasures would benefit everyone. In order to make this happen, those who live there need to be able to live their lives in an independent and free region that is recognised by the EU. They should also be able to use EU resources freely. The heart of the Catalan becomes richer when gives, not poorer. We need to stand by those who are still suffering from Franco-like nationalist ideas.
